BTEC Level 3 Photography
A focused two-year photography programme covering analogue and digital practice. Year 1 builds a strong technical foundation; Year 2 develops creative independence, advanced techniques, and a professional portfolio for progression to higher study or employment.
Learning is hands-on and clearly structured. You'll plan and shoot to brief, master studio and darkroom workflows, refine images in post-production, reflect on your process, and present work with confidence.

Entry Requirements
We will invite you to a 'Meet the Tutor' event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference/school report.
A portfolio or example of your work to demonstrate that you have the appropriate level of skill required to succeed on the course. We love to see your creativity!
4 x GCSE's at 4 or above, or a Level 2 Certificate/Extended Certificate or above (at merit or above) in a relevant subject.
You will have gained either English and/or maths at GCSE 4 or above, or L2 Functional skills in English and/or maths.

Course Content
This course offers a broad knowledge and understanding of photography and related areas including communication through art, design and digital skills. The first term of our programme will allow you to gain a solid foundation of technical skills in analogue and digital photography. This will cover camera controls, workflow and editing techniques in Lightroom as well as traditional darkroom practice. The second term you will be introduced to specialist studio lighting equipment and post-production image manipulation with Photoshop.Work is generated through practical projects, client briefs, workshops and engagement with industry, preparing you through the development of portfolios and materials for progression.

Progression Next Steps
The Extended Diploma in Photography is an ideal route for students looking for places at universities and colleges and careers in photography.The second year of our program is focused on providing you with the tools and experiences you need to transition into higher education or a professional career in the creative industries, particularly in the field of photography. First, you'll explore career paths, researching roles and routes into further education or employment. Next, you'll build on your existing skills with advanced photography techniques, covering everything from camera operation to post-processing.
You'll then move into self-initiated projects that encourage creativity and independent thinking, while also experimenting with mixed media, printmaking, and alternative darkroom processes. After that, you'll develop a professional portfolio and personal website to showcase your work to employers or universities. Finally, you'll publish a photography book to highlight your visual storytelling and take part in a group exhibition at the Penny School Gallery gaining valuable experience in showcasing your work to the public.
Alternatively, you could expect to be employed at a junior level in a related job. You will have access to a range of career and further/higher education opportunities. Graduates progress to BA Photography and related degrees, the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, apprenticeships, freelance practice, and roles across the creative industries (assistant photographer, retoucher, studio assistant, content creator)

Additional Information
Most art and design materials and equipment are provided, however, students are expected to purchase a Starter Kit at the beginning of the year. More information will be provided prior to enrolment. Ideally you would own a DSLR camera, although some can be borrowed from college.There will also be trips and visits throughout the course which will incur some costs.

Assessment Details
Our lessons are a mixture of lectures, practical workshops, gallery visits, group work and independent tasks. On the course, there are no written exams. Your portfolio is assessed across five assessment criteria: Informing Ideas, Problem Solving, Technical Skill, Professional Practice, and Communication. You'll evidence research, experimentation, iterative development, and reflective evaluation for each brief.
