BTEC Level 3 Graphic Design
If you're looking to develop your visual communication skills, then our Graphic Design course is the right place to be! It provides you with opportunities to apply creative understanding and problem solving to a range of industry style projects.
You will complete projects that build skills and confidence in using type, colour, shape, image and layout to communicate with your target audience, using technical skills to visualise and produce your final outcomes for promotional posters, packaging, logos and editorial design. Your work will be showcased as an online portfolio, to support your progression plans, that can be viewed by universities and industry employers.

Entry Requirements
We will invite you to a 'Meet the Tutor' event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.
A portfolio or example of your work to demonstrate that you have the appropriate level of skill required to succeed on the course. We love to see your creativity!
4 x GCSE's at 4 or above, or a Level 2 Certificate/Extended Certificate or above (at merit or above) in a relevant subject.

Course Content
The course projects are tailored to meet the needs of the creative industry, with content taught by lecturers who have experience of working professionally within graphic design. Practical skills are taught through workshop sessions including design idea development and visualising, hand produced and digital mark making/illustration, photography and printmaking. You'll create and develop design ideas, producing final outcomes, presenting work in a professional style in a variety of formats, including physical and digital sketchbooks. Professional practice skills, including time management, teamwork, safe practice and communication, are embedded into your learning.During your time on the course, you'll complete five projects:
Type Postcards - this explores creative letterforms through hand produced, digital, photographic and printmaking processes to create a set of promotional deigns.
STCG Seasonal Greeting Card - this is a 'live competition' project, with winning designs printed professionally.
Poster and Promotional Design - this is a 'live' project, set by an external design agency with presentation briefing and your 1-2-1 feedback critiques embedded, and includes a London exhibition visit.
Logo Design with includes a London exhibition visit.
Brand, Packaging and promotional design which also includes a London research visit.
Every project enables you to increase your understanding and use of The Design Process, by researching, exploring ideas, designing, developing, problem solving, refining, producing final outcomes and evaluating. You'll be based in our design studios, with desk space for practical and written work, that also include Mac computers for you to learn and use Adobe Suite software (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign). Lino, screen printing and etching workshops are delivered in our dedicated Printmaking Room.

Progression Next Steps
Most learners move on to our Level 3 Extended Diploma in Graphic Design, where students develop and apply their National Diploma skills within more in-depth practical design projects, including basic animation. Understanding and documenting plans for Progression within the industry (via HE, employment, apprenticeships) and use of planning and production to create an online portfolio of coursework. The final project is more self-directed, with students applying their creativity and skills to produce outcomes such as information posters, advertising campaigns, packaging design, brand and logo identities, animations, editorial design. These are then showcased in an end of year exhibition.We encourage leaners to become more independent throughout the Extended Diploma course and 1-2-1 discussions with lecturers help learners to individualise their portfolio and take ownership of their work. This also applies to progression opportunities to study at HE level for a range of creative arts courses, including graphic design, visual communication, packaging design, advertising, graphics and marketing or to apply for jobs or apprenticeships within the industry.

Most art and design materials and equipment are provided, however, students are expected to purchase a Starter Kit at the beginning of the year. More information will be provided prior to enrolment. Assessment Details
The course has no exams. You receive guidance and feedback on your day-to-day project work, with your final project evidence being submitted for assessment by the deadline date. Your evidence is assessed across five criteria: Informing Ideas, Problem Solving, Technical Skills, Professional Practice and Communication.
