Level 1 Public Services – BTEC Vocational Studies

This one-year course is designed for learners who are interested in Public Services and want to develop the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to progress to Level 2 study.

The programme combines classroom learning with practical activities and will help you develop important skills including organisation, teamwork, communication, fitness, problem solving and career planning.

You will explore careers within areas such as the Police, Fire and Rescue Service, Armed Forces, Prison Service and other public and protective services. The course provides an excellent stepping stone into further study and future employment.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course and have the opportunity to ask questions.

    This course is suitable for learners who would benefit from studying at Level 1 and who demonstrate a positive attitude towards learning.

    You will normally be working towards or have achieved 2 GCSEs at grades 1–3 or equivalent.

    Your individual GCSE profile, previous qualifications, attendance and commitment will be considered when identifying the most appropriate course for you.

    Developing a Personal Progression Plan

    Finding Out About Public Services

    Taking Part in Fitness Testing

    Responding to an Incident

    Contributing to Your Community

    Taking Part in Sport and Adventurous Activities

    The programme will also include practical activities, employability development, tutorials and opportunities to develop your English and maths.

    Pearson’s Level 1 Public Services suite is practical and skills-focused, with Public Services units including fitness testing, incident response, navigation, community activity and sport/adventurous activities.

    Duration and Delivery:

    1 Year

    The course includes both classroom and practical activities. Learners should be prepared to take part in fitness, teamwork and Public Services-related practical sessions.

    High standards of attendance, punctuality, behaviour and professional conduct are expected throughout the programme.

    Learners will have access to college sport and fitness facilities and a range of enrichment opportunities.

    The course is delivered through a mixture of classroom-based learning, practical activities, fitness sessions, group tasks and projects.

    Your programme will also include academic and pastoral tutorials, enrichment and English and/or maths where required.

    Regular attendance, punctuality and positive engagement are essential, as the course is designed to prepare learners for the expectations of Level 2 study and future employment.

    There are no traditional final written examinations for the vocational qualification.
